Environment

Right from the beginning of the development of the Moselle as a large-vessel waterway, the riparian states have been active in protecting the environment.

Public bodies oversee:

  • compliance with all environment-related regulations during construction and operation of buildings and plants;
  • maintenance of the best possible water quality;
  • conservation of natural habitats;
  • enhancement of waste management.

All measures effected by Germany, France and Luxembourg are taken within the European environmental regulatory framework, that aims to reconcile the interests of inland navigation with those of the environment. The Moselle Commission cooperates with international conservation commissions like the International Commissions for the Protection of the Moselle and the Saar (IKSMS). This joint effort aims, amongst other things, to intensify consultation between the two Commissions with reference to the EU Floods Directive and the EU Water Framework Directive.
